While at the time of the first Internet boom in 1999/2000, hardly any protagonist in Germany had much experience in building or financing startups, today the situation is different. Many entrepreneurs who learned the business the hard way in 2000 have meanwhile become serial founders, business angels, or investors.
It’s these people, plus many international entrepreneurs that have arrived in Berlin over the past years, who provide a pool of experience and practical help that enables new founders to start their business avoiding the mistakes that kill many startups right at the onset. Berlin Startup Academy makes this network of entrepreneurs, investors, creative wizards, IT gurus, and industry legends available to you as a founder – even when you’re from abroad, don’t speak German, or have so far not been in touch with the startup scene.
BSA Founder Christoph Räthke started his career in a digital agency in 1996, joined his first startup team in 1999/2000 and has been working with the Berlin digital industry ever since. From 2006, he freelanced as innovation advisor and interim manager for big and small companies. From 2008 to 2012, he co-founded and hosted Mobile Monday Berlin, running quarterly events for the Mobile Internet community. In 2010/11, Christoph ran two semesters of The Founder Institute.
From 2011 to 2013, he hosted the Startup Day at webinale conference, and helped organizing and implementing startup community events like Tech Open Air, This Week in Startups (TWiST) Berlin and Pitchslam. In 2012, he started mentoring at Startupbootcamp Berlin and Deutsche Telekom’s “Hubraum” incubator and accelerator. Christoph founded Berlin Startup Academy as Germany’s only founder-owned accelerator in Summer 2012. Since 2015, BSA works as an independent part of German Tech Entrepreneurship Center (GTEC), Germany’s most powerful initiative to unite high-growth innovation with industry, Mittelstand, capital, science, and academics. In addition, Christoph is the host of Germany’s most successful entrepreneurship talk show Founders Unscripted, and author of business/ lifestyle mag Business Punk’s startup review column.
